Texture of Silence
an experimental interdisciplinary trio
an experimental interdisciplinary trio
The Texture of Silence explores the interface between composed and improvised music and visual art. It brings together various indigenous Southern African musical instruments, jazz language, graphic notation for music and the visual explorations of line art. Across disciplines, Cara Stacey, Keenan Ahrends and Mzwandile Buthelezi use this project to explore both fixed ideas and spontaneous responses and make new work in this way.
Cara is a pianist, musical bow player and composer interested in new expression rooted in musicological rigour.
Keenan is a renowned guitarist and composer, and a central figure in South Africa’s contemporary jazz scene.
Mzwandile is a visual artist whose portfolio contains some of the most important album artworks in recent South African music.
The artworks were created during live performances during 2020-2021 using charcoal and pastel on Fabriano paper.
